The difficult economy has affected everyone to greater or lesser degrees. In addition to the widespread loss of income, many have suffered loss of property. Property being repossessed can be an excruciating experience on many levels. This dilemma is represented by a typical question/concern -- how do you keep your car from being repossessed?
The obvious, but first bit of advice to keep from being repossessed is to do everything you can to live within your means. Don't overextend your budget; account for temporary financial setbacks by doing everything you can to build a small emergency reserve fund. It may sound trite, but use the same discipline on yourself that you use on your children when it comes to the purchase of toys.
Another thing to do before you even consider applying for an auto loan is to make a detailed assessment of your monthly budget. At the very least, you should set a maximum monthly amount that you can afford to pay for a vehicle, which will allow you to still live comfortably within your means. Be careful to include projected monthly insurance payments along with your car payments when you are calculating budget limits.
Only after you have set a strict budget, should you go auto shopping. But in the event that, despite having followed all the steps responsibly, you find yourself struggling to make your car payments, take some proactive steps. At the first sign of trouble, contact your creditor and explain your situation. Instead of waiting until your vehicle is being repossessed, anticipate problems and try to work out an agreement with your lender in advance.
A good bit of knowledge to keep with you just in case you beset by financial struggles, is that most lenders do not want to resort to repossession. They would far prefer to use tactics such as incessant phone calls and constant cajoling to get you to continue to service your loan. In the long run, it is far more cost effective for them to deal with your inconsistent and irregular payments than to reclaim your vehicle.
You should try to beat them to the punch and call them before they call you. Remember, your vehicle being repossessed is far more damaging to your credit than a few 30-day and 60-day late notices. Try to muck through the hard times and trim the fat in your budget elsewhere before you through your hands up in the air in resignation to repossession.
In the end, employ all the strategies available to you. To keep from being repossessed any and all property, proactively and responsible take the challenge head on. Running away from it will not make the harsh repercussions of repossession disappear.
